Chase's Letter to Santa
Translation:
Dear Santa,
We never get to talk. We should have lunch together someday.
Love,
Chase
(Plus a lot of other random stuff including Be Cool Santa and Life is Good)
Mama's letter to Chase:
Dear Chase,
First you out math me and now you out write me? You got all the best of me kid. Use it well. And remember to thank me in the credits.
Love,
Mama

It's true
I'm not going to lie. You'd know I was and I'd know I was, so what's the point? I'm just going to come right out and say it: Yes, teachers have favorites. We try not to, but we do. And now I'm going to show you some of mine.
Here's the first:
Tetris Post It notes! Yes, of course I meant favorite presents. What did you think I meant? What?? Are you crazy??
Anyway...so maybe I did have each of my ~110 students hand write a letter to Santa for homework on Tuesday telling him just how good I've been, and that I really and truly deserved to get these in my stocking. One must use the resources one has at hand when dealing with that jolly old elf. I knew those post its would be mine--Santa couldn't possibly resist the innocent pleas of 110 fifth graders. But, I have to say that I am blown away that one of my little darlings went online that very night to find them and deliver them to me today. Poor Santa, made obsolete by a 10 year old.
Number 2:
Candyland band-aids! These are from Juliet, who isn't technically a student, but I do school her in many things--like what is and is not an acceptable music choice for instance--so it counts. These are so freaking adorable that I kind of want to cut myself just so I can put one on RIGHT NOW before Amaya finds them and commandeers them for her own boo-boos. I don't share well with others. Don't tell Santa. Oh, wait you can. I already got my Post Its. o
And last, but not least:
A hand drawn card illustrating what I've taught him in Social Studies thus far. I have to be honest again here. I find the county's 5th grade SS curriculum to be drier than 5 day old toast. That's neither here nor there really, just a side note. The point is that the best gifts are always the ones that time and thought have gone into. And the ones that acknowledge all that someone does for you, and that tell you that you deserve a wonderful Christmas break. The ones that make it clear that you matter to someone, that you've made a difference in his life. Those are the ones that make me tear up and the ones I'll save for years. Those are the ones that keep me doing this job when I have days when I think I should do anything but teach. It's more than just paper, it's the gift of purpose--reminding me that I have one, and I need to keep on trying to fulfill it.

Safe in my Bubble
Pluses of having Alfie around:
- Kids are glee-filled
- Kids somewhat behave for fear of what Alfie will tell Santa
- Promotes the holly and jolly.
- Glee-filled children want you to wake up at 6 am on a Saturday so you can see how Alfie is sitting in the gumball machine eating "Starbucks". Starbucks you say? Gimme some of that kid. (well played Juliet--keep me up all night and then disappear when the kids drag me out of bed to view your handy work. Revenge will be mine...oh yes it will be mine.)
- There is no actual Starbucks.

Merrily We Passed The Day Away
Santa Came! Santa Came!
Presents! We got presents!
Grandpa got Chase a whoopee cushion. Insert potty humor here.
Club C came to visit Club L--Pop In!
Iverson enjoyed visiting with his friends too.
And I got a gift too. Now how is she going to tell me not to eat chocolate after this? Obviously, the idea confuses me as evidenced by my ridiculous face. But if you can pull your eyes away from that silliness for a moment, take a look at the sweater my daddy got me for Christmas. Suh-weet.
Then finally at last Uncle Rob and Lindsay arrived!
This made me happy because I've been waiting all day for Lindsay's Red Velvet Cake.
And it really made Chase happy because he'd been waiting all day for Uncle Rob to come put together his Criss Cross Crash track.
Being the engineer that he is, it was not long before he had that toy whipped into shape!
Now it really was a Merry Christmas indeed.

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree
Oh Bernard, we're going to miss you and your mischievous ways. But we're oh so excited for Santa to come to our house tonight. And how do we show excitement? Why we tackle our sibling of course.
But at least Chase's hair looks good while he's at the bottom of that sister mush. See his new haircut?
And then the excitement hit a new high when Grandma and Grandpa arrived at last from the 'Wood.
After which much mayhem and silliness ensued.
But not for Mama because she had to make the Christmas Eve chili.
And it was good...
Just ask Mr. Poindexter here.
Or little Ms. Neat & Tidy here:
After dinner, we listened to Christmas carols, played Snow Monster and made a lovely holiday craft.
Then it was time to leave cookies & milk for Santa. It's kind of a miracle that any sweets were left on the plate though because every time we turned around, Amaya was cramming another one in her mouth. I finally distracted her by letting them use a marker to sign their names to Santa's letter. Tricky Mama, I am.
After observing my daughter and all of her sugar intake, I did the only logical thing--I sent her up for bath and bed. But there was no rest for the Mellon--Santa required my assistance since apparently the elves really are on strike. So the big man in red just dumped all of the presents in our family room for me to arrange under the tree. And by me, I mean Grandma.
Santa also forgot to assemble a few things, so I had to do that too. And by me, I mean Grandpa.
Of course, the problem there is that G-Pa got a little distracted by the toy guitar.
Who says Christmas is only for kids anyway?

Never Stop Learning
Being a life long learner is, in my opinion, one of the greatest things to which a person can aspire. The never ending quest for new knowledge and the cultivation of new skill sets. Just look at Bernard. How old do you think he is? 300? And he's still open to the idea of learning a new trade. I can't really speak to any acuity he may possess in tickling the ivories, but at least he's trying. That is what's important here.
See, I follow my own advice. I really enjoy my quiet Starbucks time while Chase is at his keyboarding lesson. Perhaps quiet is the wrong word since they've been playing the music in there a little loudly these days. Maybe surrounded solitariness is the better term. Being among the people but not actually having to talk to any of them. Sometimes small talk wears me out. And sometimes, I veer far away from the point--but I always find my way back. Life long learning--it's never too early to start.
Which is why today Chase and I worked on improving his table setting/chocolate milk preparing aptitude. Gotta train them young. These things don't just learn themselves you know.

Gimme a Break...Gimme a Break
Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar. I'm serious Bernard. Give me a piece of that candy, or I'm going to tell Santa what you've been up to down here. And yes, I do keep chocolate candy bars in a Distemper Remedy jar. You have your medicine, I have mine.
And on the topic of medicine, I have to tell you that taking Claritin D 12 hour right before going to bed is not a good idea. If you fail to heed my advice, and you happen to be one of the lucky few who experience insomnia as a side effect, then you will find yourself in your family room at 3:30 AM watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and drinking warm milk in the hopes of coaxing out an REM pattern or two. Of course, you probably won't be lucky enough to get to see the lunar eclipse coincide with the winter solstice like I was. Unless you plan on living a really really long time. But they probably won't even have Claritin D 12 hour then so it's really a moot point.
That's the moon around 2:30AM. Squint and you might almost think you can see it. I think I hear NASA calling for my prints now.
Breaking is the theme for today as this lovely pair demonstrates for us.
You're confused aren't you. That's because you can't really see the poor lass on the right very well. Let's take a closer look.
Yea she's completely lost her head over the guy though I'm not sure why. I find his slightly larger right eye to be a bit distracting. Amaya was quite distraught over her destroyed art so I tried to fix it. Super glue and regular tape were not working. So I semi-laminated that sucker with packing tape.
Now maybe it will keep the ants away too. See, tape really does fix everything.

And in this corner
Weighing in at less than a pound...
Bernard the Energetic Elf!
That snowman never stood a chance y'all.
Tap out. Kinda puts me in the mind of myself today when I went to my temporary gym home--
--and Jeanne told me I needed to have deep, meaningful thoughts about my buttocks. Frankly I think she's gone and lost her ever-loving mind. But, I did take a moment to have deep, meaningful thoughts about how grateful I am for parking lots that paint the bumper parking lines:
I'll take any extra help I can get. Speaking of--it is now 5 days until Christmas and I have not wrapped even a single kidlet present. Which seems a bit wrong to me since I think I've spent at least a decade in my scrap room (w)rapping my little heart out. I guess I'm just slow.
Of course, if I didn't have to stop to do laundry, take out the trash, clean the bunny cage and eat a cookie, I'm sure I'd be a lot further along. And I guess I could have gone up there right after dinner to toil away at it some more. But sometimes, you just really need to stop and enjoy life with two little snuggle bunnies on your lap.
It'll get done eventually. And if not, I can always blame an elf strike for any unwrapped presents under the tree, right?

Dr. Feelgood
Hey Buzz, wanna be friends?
Batman mania continues. Oh and check out the cool wristbands. Rock star.
Super proud of her pretty Christmas dress.
Funny retro picture I forgot to share yesterday. Santa scares me. I won't lie.
Christmas Party: Take Two. Holly? Check. Jolly? Check.
Shot to the head? Hit me. Is that all you got?
